Just because your favorite senior citizen is slowing down a bit that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the Christmas holidays. Here are a few activities to help make the holidays festive and fun!
Go for a Drive
View the holiday lights and displays from the comfort of your car. Turn on the radio and listen to holiday music and enjoy the cheer and beauty of the season.
Deck the Halls Together
Whether your loved one lives at home or in assisted living, help him or her feel included in the holidays by decorating together. A holiday tree, even a small one, adds cheer and brightness to the holidays. It is a simple task to place ornaments on the tree.
Participate in a Simple Party
Many senior centers and senior facilities host holiday parties. Check our your local centers for holiday events catered for seniors – choir groups, violin recitals, sing-a-longs – all add to holiday cheer!
Have your senior friend help prepare a meal or traditional holiday treat. Many parts of food preparation can be done while sitting – don’t exclude your senior simply because they are unable to stand. Snipping beans, icing cookies or arranging a veggie tray can all be done while sitting in a comfortable chair.
Take the time to talk about past holidays. Ask questions: What was your most memorable Christmas as a child? Did you ever fear you were on Santa’s naughty list? Did you ever spend a Christmas away from home? What are your favorite holiday traditions?
Express Your Love and Appreciation
The opportunity to spend holiday time together is a blessing. Take a moment to share your love and appreciation!
