As we age, there is a tendency to focus on what has been lost. And there are some significant things that we lose: loved ones, memory, flexibility, even hair. We learn to appreciate the simple pleasures in life and don’t worry so much about the small stuff. In addition, we focus more on what is really important and what leads to overall well-being. Stanford psychologist Laura Carstensen, a Stanford psychologist, calls this the “socioemotional selectivity theory.” Benefit #2: We have a tendency to have increased happy emotions and a decrease in negative emotions. One study (conducted by Carstensen) showed that people in their 70s and 80s were the very happiest of any age. Now that’s something to smile about! Benefit #3: Finally … all that experience and knowledge has paid off! Seniors demonstrate a great ability for “wisdom-related thinking” and making sound life decisions (a study by social psychologist Igor Grossman supports this). Benefit #4: If you have been a migraine sufferer, a study by Headache Center of Atlanta, concluded that people over age 50 had fewer and less severe migraines than their younger counterparts.
