Boost Immunity with These Underrated Herbs

By Ted Holmgren, 9:00 am on May 29, 2015

As strong as the immune system is, daily life can hamper its function. However, nature has a medicine chest of herbs that arm against illness. If you provide hourly home care for an aging loved one, consider using immune-boosting herbs when preparing meals. Here are the superheroes of the herbal kingdom that supercharge immunity.

Cat’s Claw

Cat’s Claw contains nitrogen compounds called alkaloids. These chemicals serve as antioxidants and immune boosters. Cat’s Claw also kills viruses and bacteria, protects against cancer, and relieves the inflammation of arthritis and gout. It is beneficial for digestive disorders such as colitis, gastritis, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and ulcers. The herb also combats viral and fungal infections, such as cold sores, shingles, and Candida. If that wasn’t enough, additionally, it lowers blood pressure and acts as a diuretic.

Oregano

Oregano is an herb in the mint family and has a host of vitamins and minerals. It also contains rosmarinic acid, a potent antioxidant. Oregano rids the lungs of phlegm when a cold takes hold, it is used to treat allergies, bronchitis, urinary tract infection, yeast infection, and food poisoning, and it’s also effective for acne, bloating, dandruff, earache, headache, muscle pain, canker sore, and toothache. Additionally, it can be used as an insect repellent.

Nettle

Lectins in nettle are responsible for its immune-boosting properties. Nettle contains natural steroids with anti-inflammatory power and is high in vitamins and flavonoids. Chemicals in the leaf reduce the pain and stiffness of arthritis and gout, lower blood pressure, relieve urinary retention, and ease the symptoms of asthma, hay fever, sinus congestion, bronchitis, and the common cold. In research studies, nettle shows promise in treating Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, tendinitis, and sciatica.

Astragalus

Astragalus is a plant native to Asia and is an adaptogen. This term refers to a natural substance that helps the body adapt to stress. Astragalus helps the body differentiate between healthy cells and rogue cells, enhancing immunity. It increases the production of white blood cells and antibodies, and it is effective against bacteria and viruses. Astragalus is also effective for the common cold, flu, allergies, upper respiratory infection, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and high blood pressure. Additionally, studies show it increases survival rate and life span in the treatment of cancer.
